The thing was, he may have fallen asleep beside Tony, and to the sounds of the other man talking, no less. Once the area around him had lapsed into silence though, his ingrained paranoia didn't allow for him to continue sleeping peacefully while someone else moved around him. By the time those cotton balls joined the tea on the table he was more dozing than sleeping exactly. That Tony was no longer speaking was an immediate alert that something was wrong.
Not that he'd have logically expected Tony to stick around after he fell asleep the second time but it was a strange kind of peace, sleeping in a place where he was, theoretically anyway, safe. Tony's seemingly abrupt absence made that space considerably less safe. Which made very little sense if he thought about it too much, with the Iron part of Iron Man now fully dismantled. Irrational but there were some things he tried not to argue with himself about, especially when it came to things that made the other guy feel safe because they were few and far between.
It was an odd, spasm in his neck that was the final factor in waking him up and he made a small noise that he wasn't quite conscious of as he shifted in that chair, frowning as he turned his head and his neck cracked sharply. Which had his hand coming up to rub at his neck as he blinked slowly down at the mug in front of him. "Miss Potts."
"As efficient as ever I see, despite..." Dark eyes flicked up to her, flashing her a sheepish, apologetic look. Despite things that he didn't actually understand completely because well... he'd slept through most of that story, hadn't he? But he knew enough about unfortunate experiment results that he could understand her not wanting to talk about it, or be reminded of it at all.
